Inside the Poker Mind: Essays on Hold'em and General Poker Concepts, by John Feeney.
(2005) 275 pp. softcover, Two Plus Two Publishing, ISBN: 1-880685-26-4. Despite the name, this is less a psychology book than a practical approach to common poker situations and how to learn the game. Feeney explains how he developed into an expert player, and how to avoid common illusions about chance. He describes the "strategic moment" in poker where decisions are made, and the difference between how skilled and less-experienced players approach that moment. The book is most valuable for the way it pulls a variety of skills together and shows how to apply them. Poker is a complicated game, and even after reading all the books, it is hard to put all the knowledge into practice. Feeney tries to show how to bring the quality of your actual play up to the level of your book learning. This is not a beginners book. Feeney is most knowledgeable about middle-limit stakes. Independent book review.
